Does anyone have information about the jobs at University of Kentucky
and/or Miami of Ohio that were listed on the sociology wiki?

Anonymous said...

The best thing to do when you see jobs on the wiki board is to go to one of the soc. jobs websites like chronicle careers, higheredjobs.com, the ASA job bank, etc. Both of the ones you're curious about can be seen in the ASA job bank.

Anonymous said...

yes, you can find all these jobs on the job bank or the ASA employment service (except the Tulane one and the Wisconsin-Madison one, for some reason). But, if you're asking because you don't want to fork over the cash to get access to those listings, just say so. I'll cut and paste them.

Anonymous said...

I just downloaded the ASA Job Bank and I found the U of Kentucky announcement (sorry about that) but not the Miami of Ohio one (just U of Miami in Florida). Maybe I am missing something? Thank you for your help.

I was wondering how many schools are interviewing at through the official process at ASA this year? I did the employment service thing last year (didn't lead to much, I'm in a post-doc now), and have not forked out the money either to attend ASA or take part in the service. Just curious if I'm missing out on anything... ;)

Anonymous said...

Looking at this year's description of the service, and an archived description of last years, it looks like the number of employers has gone from 70 in 2005 to 80 in 2006. Given that slope, I'm guessing maybe 90 or so employers this year.

This doesn't mean that there are more jobs, necessarily; just that it looks like more schools are using the service.

"We are sorry, but the Employment Service is totally full and ASA can not accept any new Employer registrations as of July 30, 2007."

Looks like that's it for employers at the service unless some are registered but have not posted their ads yet.

Anonymous said...

by my count, there are at least 14 schools that are registered for the employment service that haven't posted their ads yet.

Anonymous said...

14 schools?

I saw 88 registered employers and 86 postings. How did you calculate 14?

-just curious.

Anonymous said...

There are a bunch of schools with multiple job postings (like Mich State). I looked at the employer id #s. There were 14 unused ID #s between 1 and 88. Since that - the Williams institute ad went up, so now there's 13.

Clearly, I'm spending too much time obsessing over job sites. :)

Anonymous said...

Gotcha. Okay, 13 more posts on the employment service site and then I can stop checking every 15 minutes...

:)

ps. I was hoping you were wrong... because I need to get back to work!

Yeah, then I'll only be compulsively checking the chronicle, the regular job bank, highered jobs.com, and this.

Don't forget insidehighered.com They only update new jobs every two weeks. But that doesn't keep me from checking every half hour... :)

Does anyone have any more info on the "open search" at Wisconsion-Madison (as posted on the Wiki)? I haven't seen this listed anywhere (ASA, Chronicle, etc.). On the Wisconsin-Madison website, they list three open positions in sociology: 1) political economy; 2) open; and 3) economic sociology. However, the job listings for #2 and #3 are dated from last year. I'm not sure if this is an error, or if this means that these job announcements are old. Anyone know anything more about this?

UMass Amherst is interesting because I know someone who got a job there, but it was actually a post-doc. So, they say they are hiring four assistant profs, but it looks like they are not tenure track.

Anonymous said...

Is it possible to be a non-tenure track *assistant* professor?

Anonymous said...

Anonymous 8:12:

I believe they are called "Visiting Assistant Professors," or VAPs. They are folks with Ph.D.s with temp jobs that are unlikely to become permanent positions. Some people describe VAPs as simply glorified adjuncts.

Anonymous said...

Yes, but VAPs are usually advertised as VAPs.

Here is the job posting:

University of Massachusetts-Amherst. The Department of Sociology invites
applications for up to four tenure-track positions beginning Fall 2007. Two
positions will be at the assistant professor level. One or more positions may
be appointed at the Associate or early Full Professor levels. Substantive
specializations are open. We anticipate hiring one or more candidates who can
make contributions to the core curriculum in theory. The department has a
strong Ph.D. program in Sociology and candidates should be interested in making
significant contributions to that program. Applications received after October
15 cannot be assured full consideration. Applicants should have firm
expectations of a completed PhD by September 2007 and be eager to join an
intellectually lively, growing department. The department and the university
are committed to increased diversity in its faculty and student ranks. Please
send a resume, letter of application, publications or samples of written work,
and three letters of reference to Robert Zussman Recruitment Committee Chair,
Department of Sociology, Thompson Hall, University of Massachusetts, Amherst,
MA 01003-5725.

Anonymous said...

I think the UMass ad clearly states that the positions are tenure-track positions. I guess I'm not sure what you mean by non-tenure-track "assistant professor" if you don't mean VAP.

Anonymous said...

I think we are confusing ourselves.

Someone questioned whether the jobs were really TT jobs. According to their ad, they are. If they were for post-docs or VAPs, they would be advertised as such.

Good luck to anyone who applies. UMass-Amherst sounds like a nice place to work.

Anonymous said...

Did anyone who talked to Loyola Chicago at ASA ask what materials they would like to see or where said materials should be sent? It seems that these items did not make their position notice.

Anonymous said...

re: VAP vs. adjunct

i have heard that departments rarely if ever hire an adjunct for a TT assit. position, while VAPs are considered candidates for them. so i have been advised that it is better to wait a year and do the job market again than to take an adjunct and try for TT the following year.

Anonymous said...

re: tt and adjunct

the history dept at my school just hired an adjunct as tenure track. one of the people who interviewed for my position in soc was an adjunct here as well. it's not the most likely scenario, but it does happen.

Anonymous said...

According to someone I talked to, UMass Amherst is indeed hiring a lot of tenure-track faculty. They're being given money to expand, and the job posting is what it says it is.

Anonymous said...

Someone already posed this question in another thread, but I thought I would re-post it here.

What's going on with the ASA Job Bank? There haven't been new jobs since before the ASA meeting. Will there suddenly be a flood of ads? Is this customary?

heard any rumors about Georgia jobs?

I'm waiting for something from University of Georgia, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Emory, or University of West Georgia.

(I know about the Georgia State, Gainesville, Georgia Southwestern, and Berry College listings - they don't fit me).

Is anyone in the know?

About the Barnard position: I spoke with someone in their department, and it sounds like they have a heavy teaching load but when you come up for tenure, it is with the entire faculty (including Columbia) and they evaluate you based on whether you have met both teaching AND RESEARCH standards that would pass muster at Columbia. For what it's worth...

Are people deleting job posting from the wiki list? Just curious as I've posted some to keep it updated, and they've gone missing.

the wiki is a little finicky. Sometimes I think I've entered the password in correctly, but find that it hasn't registered. Check the wiki history if you suspect people are deleting things. Most likely, your changes never registered.

Thanks. I already checked...they did register. :-)

Mississippi State. Listing for a tenure track position went up this morning on the Chronicle of Higher Ed site. Surfing over to the school's HR page this seems to be for a specialization in demography, essentially the same as a position advertised last summer. Judging by the wiki, it looks like they already interviewed candidates for such a position but have not made a hire. Anyone have more info?

Mississippi State did make a hire earlier in the year. I am not sure if this is a new position and they got an extra line or if the new hire pulled out. Probably the former.

There's a new job posted in the ASA Job Bank for Akita International University in Japan. If you're tempted, you might want to check out a discussion on the Chronicle forum before putting too much effort into an application: http://chronicle.com/forums/index.php/topic,28632.0.html
