The wiki shows that CS-Fullerton has scheduled phone interviews AND sent rejection letters. I haven't heard from them either way - should I contact them?

Anonymous said...

Albany School of Criminal Justice has made an offer for a junior position, but I don't know about Sociology.

Anonymous said...

UAlbany Soc made an offer over a week ago.

Anonymous said...

I'm curious about what's going on with the Michigan State University med soc position (Soc/Lymann Briggs). Anyone have any leads?

Anonymous said...

I got rejected from Hope (College).

Anonymous said...

RE: Monclair State University - I am waiting on tenderhooks too. My phone interview was over two weeks ago now!

Anonymous said...

Re: Montclair--I'm second on the tenderhook waiting list. Had my phone interview two weeks ago also.

Anonymous said...

Montclair-tenderhooks-allies, do you know what their teaching load? Someone mentioned 4/4. Does that sound familiar?

Anonymous said...

Has Berkeley completed their job talks? any offers out?

Anonymous said...

How many people on the Yale shortlist, any idea?

Anonymous said...

Does Yale already have a shortlist?

Anonymous said...

One of my friends is on the Yale shortlist.

Anonymous said...

Any info on the University of Wisconsin-Madison? Have they scheduled any interviews?

Anonymous said...

I second the request for info on the med soc position (Lyman Briggs College) at Michigan State.

Anonymous said...

anyone heard from cu-denver?

Anonymous said...

anyone heard from cal state sonoma?

HELP! I fly out tomorrow for an interview and have yet to receive an itinerary and I was told I would be picked up at the airport but have no other info....Any suggestions? I have no idea what to expect, who to look for, or how I will find them.....

Anonymous said...

It's hillarious that you are flying without an itinerary. I really wonder what school that could be.

Anonymous said...

assuming it's too late to call them, I would email all the people you have been in contact with (especially the department secretaries) and give them your cell phone # and flights.

but i know what you mean--i had an interview last year where i had to catch a cab at the airport and find my way to the department (which isn't always that easy on a big campus and when your driver has limited english), only to wait for an hour for some grad student to show up and give me a key to a room in a seminary, which was almost a mile away (and I had to haul my bags). it wasn't the most welcoming start to the interview, to say the least.

good luck--i'm sure they will be in touch. you'll probably see someone at baggage claim with a sign.

Anonymous said...

Thank you 5:53 and 5:58....I needed to hear that!
:)

Anonymous said...

Berkeley is still interviewing. I know they have an interview scheduled either at the end of this week or the beginning of next week.

Anonymous said...

5:56
roll with it and enjoy your trip. be sure to have a couple of phone numbers at the ready in case you have to call someone. you may be inconvenienced... you may not. remember that you are checking them out as much as they are checking you out. if the other functions of this department are this disorganized, big red flag!!!

Anonymous said...

RE Wisconisin:
I got a request for writing samples last week for the open area position.

Anonymous said...

Any news on the status of the Assistant Professor in Demography search at CUNY? Have they started interviewing? Do they have a short-list?

I've heard indirectly that an offer was made but I don't know if it was for the Associate or the Assistant Prof position.

Thanks!

Anonymous said...

I absolutely agree that you should interpret how well they take care of you during your campus visit as an indication of how you will be valued as a member of the faculty.

Good luck!

Anonymous said...

Re: CUNY. If you look at the wiki you'll see the offer was for the more senior position
RE: UBC, they contacted a colleague of mine to invite him, so my guess is they are already inviting candidates

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know what the status is for the ASU or New Mexico criminology positions? Thanks.

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard anything new about Cornell's PAM demography position? According to the wiki, it looks like one person has been invited for an interview. Has the interview already happened? Was an offer made? Have any other candidates been notified? Thanks.

Anonymous said...

it would be great if the wiki readers among us could keep up with the x's - that way the rest of us have a better idea whether people have been notified about being shortlisted (or maybe even about how many people have been called in for interviews). thanks!

Anonymous said...

Anyone heard about Valdosta? I haven't heard anything since my phone interview a couple of weeks ago.

Anonymous said...

RE: CUNY

I heard through the grapevine that Queens still works on their shortlist for the Demography junior position. They didn't call anyone yet.

Anonymous said...

Re Valdosta:
I had a phone interview with them a couple of weeks ago too, and I haven't heard anything back from them either.
Of my 3 phone interviews, that was the one I felt the least positive about afterward. I'd be interested in hearing if others had the same feeling.

Anonymous said...

re: Sonoma State University

I was contacted by them for more information with a request to keep a date open for an interview.

Anonymous said...

9:58 - was that request for the Sonoma State Sociology Search or for their Women's Studies search?

Anonymous said...

I was contacted 2 or 3 weeks ago about the New Mexico crim position.

Anonymous said...

YALE:

My friend just got contacted for an interview.

Anonymous said...

UVA (open) is scheduling interviews too.

Anonymous said...

The wiki says the Berkeley position in Diversity/Democracy is interviewing. Does anyone have more information?

I've learned a lot about the process from this blog. I appreciate the forum and especially the collegial sharing. Thanks and good luck!

Anonymous said...

10:13 - thanks for the information, and good luck with the UNM interview.

Anonymous said...

re: 10:02

Sonoma State contacted me about the sociology search.

Anonymous said...

Sonoma State Women's Studies has also scheduled interviews.

Anonymous said...

2:33 Actually, I ended up withdrawing my name because I took another position. Who knows? They're probably still searching.

Anonymous said...

For the person who posted that University of Tennessee was scheduling interviews: was that for the Environmental Soc or African Soc position? Thanks.

Anonymous said...

Cornell's PAM department is still interviewing as of this week. I think that they are interviewing three junior candidates in total.

Anonymous said...

Who got the Rice job?
a postdoctoral fellow already there last year?

Anonymous said...

Somebody added UIC to the list of schools that have made offers on the Wiki. Is this for the theory position or the organizations position?

Anonymous said...

Tennessee is interviewing for both the Africana Studes and the Environmental position.

Anonymous said...

According to the Wiki, Princeton is interviewing for its demography position. Any details?

Anonymous said...

re: Princeton.

What kind of details would you like? their social security numbers, perhaps?

Anonymous said...

6:43 AM

WOW! Where did that come from?

Anonymous said...

6:43: Yes, social security numbers, mailing addresses, shoe sizes...that's exactly what I was curious about. Seriously, were you born a jackass, or should I just attribute it to job market stress?

I just assumed that on a job market blog people would be smart enough to know I was asking about scheduling/interview details without having to spell it out - when did they start scheduling interviews? How many candidates are they bringing in? Have they contacted everyone?

Anonymous said...

I was contacted by Princeton to schedule an interview earlier this week. I don't know the answer to any of your questions (well, perhaps shoe size). I wish I did.

Anonymous said...

Thanks, 7:46.

Anonymous said...

Anyone heard from the Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy postdoc? Any idea when people should expect to hear from them based on previous experience?

Thanks!

Anonymous said...

Regarding the RWJF Health Policy and Health & Society postdocs, you would get an e-mail around Dec. 15th that you made it to the interview rounds. If you don't get an e-mail, you will receive snail mail by the end of January that your application will not go any further.

Anonymous said...

If anybody applied to the RWJ Health & Society Program (the OTHER one), you'll hear about the same time, too. They usually email and call.

Anonymous said...

Oops, sorry to repeat info there. But I do remember getting a call as well.

Anonymous said...

Knox College has a short list, planning to bring people out in Jan/Feb.

Cal State Sacramento is currently interviewing for the Methods/Stats position.

Univ of West Georgia is currently conducting phone interviews for the Methods/Stats position. They also plan to bring people out in Jan/Feb.

Anonymous said...

I know one person who has a Princeton interview, but s/he asked me not to reveal his/her shoe size at this time.

(Actually I do know someone - this person has several other interviews also and I'm guessing will get multiple offers. I know someone else who has been contacted to find out if they are still interested, but have not scheduled an interview yet. Or if they have, I haven't heard about it yet, which is likely I guess since this all happened a few days ago.)

In case anyone is dying to know, I wear a size 9.5 women's shoe. Unless I'm wearing heels. Then I wear a 10.

-cpl

Anonymous said...

Thanks, cpl. I WAS dying to know. It's such a treat to be given something without having to work my butt off for it!
-L 8)

Anonymous said...

I wonder if CPL and I know the same person who is interviewing at Princeton and has had other interviews at top places. It seems like a really competitive year for the demography positions.

Anonymous said...

2:55 -

Its possible. I think one thing to keep in mind is that just because six people "know someone" who got an interview, that doesn't mean there are 6 people. We might all know the same person!

I do think there are several very impressive candidates on the market this year, both in demography and other sub-fields. I assume a lot of us know the same well-known candidates within our subfields.

Anonymous said...

I took U of Vermont off the wiki. I confirmed with the search chair today that they have not brought anyone in for any interviews. Makes me distrust the wiki! Why would somebody put something up there that was not true?

Anonymous said...

I heard that American University made an offer.

Anonymous said...

6:26, that's why it is called a rumor mill, not a verified information mill... there are countless ways for inaccurate information to wind up posted on this blog, and most bear no ill-intentions.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know what is happening with the Michigan State African Diaspora/Migration position? I don't see it listed anywhere on the wiki

Anonymous said...

good to hear that about Vermont. i'd been thinking for awhile that the wiki was wrong on that score.

i spoke with someone at American University a week or so ago and they were still "in process." as i recall, they have two open positions there.

Anonymous said...

Can corroborate 11:28 with Sac State interviewing and West Georgia phone interviewing with an intent to let campus candidates know around the first of the year....
p.s. 11:28 you must be my competition!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

hello competition! add another to the list, i too did a phone interview with west georgia. i really appreciated the frankness of their conversation. others should be so transparent.

Anonymous said...

I too interviewed with West Georgia by phone this week. Keep in mind they are hiring for up to four positions, so we may not be in direct competition with each other. Regardless, good luck all!

Anonymous said...

has anyone else heard about USC? Have they conducted any interviews yet?

Anonymous said...

Interviews are already scheduled for USC.

Anonymous said...

Anyone hear anything about Loyola (urban hire)? I know they've interviewed some candidates, but I was wondering if they'd made an offer or if perhaps they would dip back into the pool...? (I know it's grasping for straws, but hey - it's the job market.)

Anonymous said...

There appears to be some inaccuracy regarding the University of Vermont position. I know someone who interviewed there several weeks ago.

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard about UT-Arlington? It's been a month since their review starting date.

Anonymous said...

Yeah; I put Vermont on the wiki because I heard that a friend-of-a-friend was interviewing there. But, it was second-hand info, so could have been wrong. But, I'm kind of doubtful. Are there two positions? This was for the race position.

Anonymous said...

Looks like interviews have been scheduled for Pomona over the next few weeks.

Anonymous said...

any word on the status of searches at holy cross or simmons?

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard anything at all from Ohio State?

Anonymous said...

University of Toronto-Scarborough? Anybody heard anything about the urban position there?

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard anything about my first choice school?

Anonymous said...

Aha ha ha. Oh, gosh that's funny. That's really funny. Do you write your own material? Do you? Because that is so fresh.

Anonymous said...

Some people are clearly above and beyond all of this. I don't know why they come here to hang out with us mortals.

Anonymous said...

UT-Scarborough (Urban): I heard that they didn't get many applications, and are considering calling off the search.

Anonymous said...

for the person seeking info on the berkeley democracy/diversity position, they are interviewing at this point. other people who made the midlist but not the campus interviews have now been notified.

Anonymous said...

Thanks, 8:52.

Anonymous said...

Re: Berkeley. If you look carefully at their website Berkeley has finished with the interviews. They had 5 people over and will decide on Monday who is getting the call. Good luck!!
Re: Rice, my guess is that -as we did last year- you have to wait till September and check at the school's website who got the job.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know what is happening with the Eckerd College search? I see that they have scheduled campus interviews. Have they happened? If so, if you feel like sharing, what were your impressions?

Anonymous said...

re: Eckerd. According to my info - their initial offer was declined and they are deciding whether to go back to their short list and bring in another round of interviews. It is a good job, very student-centered but with better support for research than other schools its size.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the information on Eckerd!

Anonymous said...

I got a AA form letter from Ohio State today that was dated pre-Thanksgiving.

Anonymous said...

Bowdoin College has made an offer and it has been accepted.

Anonymous said...

Did something happen to the wiki list of interviews, offers, etc.? When I click on the link, I get a message saying that the page doesn't exist yet. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Anonymous said...

I get the same thing - the page is gone.

-cpl

Anonymous said...

Looks like somebody deleted it.

Anonymous said...

Its back. Does anybody have a copy of it in case somebody does delete it?

Anonymous said...

i tried to do a restore from the last update. did it work? -m

Anonymous said...

It did work, but then someone put an older restore over it... To the person who restored using Google cache, that's not necessary. You can restore based on a previous update, which I have done again over your cached restore. It uses an update from earlier today, which is better than the 12/1 cache. -m

Anonymous said...

Sorry - I was the one who restored using the google cache. I didn't realize that the old revisions were still there, and could be restored.

The person who deleted the page also deleted several others at the same time (psych (again), anthro, bio). Last week they deleted psychology. So, it might happen again.

Anonymous said...

sorry to add to the list of what about this position and that position - but, anybody heard anything about CUNY-Queens (demography and/or race) or UC-Merced?

Anonymous said...

UC-Merced is bringing out its top to candidates this week. They will then decide if they want to bring out any more candidates

Anonymous said...

Somebody nixed the wiki again. Frown. Will the tech savvy among us please restore the last version?

-Karl

Anonymous said...

the wiki is completely gone. how shall i obsessively check it? :-(

Anonymous said...

How about if the tech-savvy also out the IP markers of this person? Preferably in bold print at the top of the wiki? That was remarkably successful last year on the policy jobs wiki. It never disappeared again.

Anonymous said...

I wondered when this would start happening. Quite frankly, I am suprised it took until now. There are idiots everywhere.

Anonymous said...

This may have been posted on the wiki that is currently missing: Wisconsin has scheduled an interview for later this week.

Anonymous said...

Even I, the keeper of confidentiality, would not disapprove of posting the offender's IP address.

-karl

Anonymous said...

Hear, Hear Karl!

Anonymous said...

I don't think posting the IP address will help. The person who's deleting the wiki has a dynamic IP address, but it's registered in Reston, VA. Based on the address of the provider, it looks like it's probably a university-owned IP.

Last week when I restored the psych wiki, when it was deleted by this person, I posted the IP and location in bold at the top. Didn't work - the psych wiki got deleted twice more. It's since been moved to another wikihost.

Anonymous said...

I believe that an IP addressed registered in "Reston, VA" means it's an AOL account. But, it could be any AOL account (i.e. from anywhere in the U.S.). So, not too helpful.

Anonymous said...

Any news on St Mary's College, Fordham, or Western MI?

Anonymous said...

If you put an IP address into a whois search like that on domaintools.com you should see if it is registered to university and, if not generally where it is located (not just where the provider is registered). Believe me I know, I track the traffic on my site to see which universities have visited.

Anonymous said...

8:34am - Do you mean Mount St. Mary's University? If so, then I received an email from them last week stating they had made a shortlist and checking if these people were still interested in the position. I've heard nothing more since then.

Anonymous said...

I took a nap, and the wiki came back. Correlation or causation?

-Karl

Anonymous said...

Karl - looks like a strong causal claim to me. I'll see if I can replicate your finding.

-cpl

Anonymous said...

To whomever posted that U of Texas at Arlington asked for more information, what did they ask for? Thanks!

Anonymous said...

Any information on St Mary's College of Nortre Dame?

Anonymous said...

1:37,
I wasn't the one who posted about it before, but U Texas Arlington is asking for a writing sample.

Anonymous said...

Someone has just removed the wiki again. I've been saving it periodically since it started disappearing and had just saved it so it should be as it was at about 8.30pm tonight. If everyone saves the page every now again I bet we can outfox the moron removing it.

Anonymous said...

why would someone do that? again? I don't get it.

-karl

Anonymous said...

I hear you Karl - as if the job hunt experience isn't stressful enough already. Everyone keep on saving the page and the phantom wiki remover will be thwarted!

Anonymous said...

1:37 and 5:29: yes, ut-arlington asked for a writing sample. best of luck.

Anonymous said...

Any word on Dickinson?

Anonymous said...

Michigan State MedSoc (Lymann Briggs) has scheduled interviews. Or, at least one.

Anonymous said...

Anyone know why the Loyola Chicago religion position was removed from the "Shortlist" category on the wiki?

Anonymous said...

11:47, I didn't remove Loyola, but I do know that they are presently interviewing for that job.

Anonymous said...

re: Loyola - religion

I don't know why it was removed, but I do know that they started interviewing for that position last week.

Anonymous said...

Is a request for permission to contact references a good sign, or is it just routine in some places (like, say... San Jose State)?

Anonymous said...

Permission to contact references is a good sign, and is routine in some places. :-)

Anonymous said...

The phantom wiki remover just struck again, but I had saved it at about 4:50pm today so I simply reposted that info. If you added anything between 4:50pm and 5:50pm please be sure to repost that info. Cheers.

Anonymous said...

Looks like they got a bunch this time: geography, religion, education, anthro, chemistry and classics.

I find this whole thing fascinating - the blogs, wikis, the dissemination of knowledge. I really hope one of us is studying this.

I know on most of the interviews I've gone on, these digital information sharing practices (faulty as though they may sometimes be) come as a complete surprise to the search committee.

Anonymous said...

This is getting annoying. Does anyone know how to figure out who is the service provider for

71.244.215.187

Can't we email to complain to their isp?

Anonymous said...

Re: wiki idiot. I've reposted the same 4:50pm (eastern time) version I posted when they deleted earlier today as detailed a few posts above. I shall try continue to save the page every few hours or so, so at worst we lose just a few additions.

Anonymous said...

It's in CINCINNATI, OHIo and is through VERIZON INTERNET SERVICES INC

Anonymous said...

The wiki says that University of Maryland College Park scheduled interviews for 4 people (if I am reading that correctly), but that's only for the junior candidates. 5 people were scheduled for the senior candidates. In case anyone was wondering.

Anonymous said...

Arizona State has scheduled interviews for the second and third week in January.

Anonymous said...

anyone have any info on those SLAC jobs in upstate NY with later deadlines, namely Hartwick and/or Bard?

Anonymous said...

Wiki says that UIC made an offer. Does anybody know for what position?

Anonymous said...

On the wiki it says Pomona College's job talks are posted on their website. I could not find them. Could someone post a link? Thanks.

Anonymous said...

UIC- I'm pretty sure that they made an offer for theory.

I don't know about the organizations search.

Anonymous said...

10:10, thanks a lot for the UIC info.

Anonymous said...

Wells made an offer.

Anonymous said...

UIC has made offers for both the theory and the organizations positions.

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard anything about CUNY Brooklyn (race) or Ithaca College (crime)?

Anonymous said...

RE: Brooklyn CUNY (race)

They made an offer and it was accepted

Anonymous said...

Re: Pomona. I was looking for that too. There are some dates listed in the campus events calendar, but no info. Looks like 4 candidates so far.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know anything at all about the University of Northern Iowa theory search advertised on asanet? Deadline was 10-1, but I've heard nothing - not even rejection - and no one seems to be discussing it.

Was the search canceled?

Also, anyone hear anything from Brigham Young?

Anonymous said...

the psych wiki has also been deleted several times in the past week. we're now using a wikidot site (http://psychjobs.wikidot.com/psych-job-search-07-08) and it seems to be working well. as far as i know, no information has been deleted yet...

Anonymous said...

Re: Pomona, check the campus events under lunch with students and cross check with the job talk dates for more info...

Anonymous said...

re: Univ of Toronto (Scarborough) & its urban search

There were postings a week or two back about this search possibly being called off. However, it appears to be "on" so far. Today I got an impersonal email saying they now have a long list and that a short list will be drawn up after a Tuesday meeting in Toronto.

Anonymous said...

Wells College offer has been accepted.

Anonymous said...

U of Northern Iowa scheduled interviews in November.

Anonymous said...

It is a little unclear from the WIKI--has UNC-Greensboro scheduled interviews?
Thanks!

Anonymous said...

Fordham University is listed as having scheduled an interview/s. Is this for the open/methods position (Lincoln Center campus) or the urban/immigration position (Rose Hill campus)?

Anonymous said...

Thanks for cleaning up the wiki. The UNC-Greensboro posting now makes sense.

Anyone know how many people they are bringing in?

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard anything from UW-Stout? They closed almost a month ago

Anonymous said...

Yale used to be in the "scheduled interviews" list. Not anymore. What happened? Does anyone know?

Anonymous said...

several jobs talks are underway at yale

Anonymous said...

A freaky guy came back. I have restored the wiki (yesterday 9:35pm edition).

Anonymous said...

Wiki is gone again. Its great to see that this idiot has so much free time on his/her hands that they can troll these sites and remove this stuff. Since this is obviously going to continue, I woule like to request that when someone adds an offer or acceptance to the wiki that they also post it in the blog under the appropriate section. That way we can always be getting the most important info regularly without worrying about missing it because of the deletions.

Anonymous said...

Yale has scheduled four job talks for last week and this week and is scheduled to vote on the appointment at the end of the week.

Anonymous said...

Apologies if some of this is already known; with the Wiki down I can't be sure. Offers have been made at:

SUNY Buffalo
U Mass
University of Miami

Anonymous said...

I got a rejection email today from the RWJF Health and Society Scholars program. :-( Shouldn't be suprised...if you look at who they selected in previous years (on their website), it appears that they just trade people across their own schools. You don't see very many scholars selected at all from places other than Berkeley, Columbia, Princeton, UCLA, Wisconsin, Michigan, UPenn, or Harvard. If anybody hears anything from the Health Policy Scholars program, it would be great if you post it on here. Thanks.

Anonymous said...

Lehigh has a short list. I was notified by email that I wasn't on it.

Anonymous said...

9:40
About Lehigh. When did you receive their e-mail? Was it last week?

Thanks.

Anonymous said...

Re Lehigh. Were you initally asked for additional info and then notified that you were not on a short list? Thanks, and sorry about that!

Anonymous said...

Queens is listed on the wiki as having a long-shortlist. Does anyone have more info? Were people on the list contacted? Thanks!

Anonymous said...

The RWJ Scholars in Health Policy Program will meet this week to finalize their list of interviewees.

Anonymous said...

Re: Queens. I received an email from the chair asking me if I was still interested in the position and that they had made some sort of a list.

Anonymous said...

I see from the Wiki that someone interviewed at Ursinus College - does anyone know if an offer was made and if it was accepted? Thanks.

Anonymous said...

RWJ HSS has selected sociologists recently from UT-Austin, UC-Boulder, Penn State, UCSF, U Illinois Champaign-Urbana, and NYU. Good schools, all, but not in your list.

Anonymous said...

10:51- look at their picks from last year. Here is the breakdown: Harvard (5), Princeton (1), U Michigan (1), UCLA (1), Johns Hopkins (1), Columbia (1), Brown (1), UNC Chapel Hill (1), U Penn (1), NYU (1- but has PhD from Berkeley), Ohio State (1, but did extensive health research outside of the country). Looks like a lot of Ivy and top ranked schools to me!

Anonymous said...

10:59; 10:51 here. I hear you. Just pointing out that last year wasn't necessarily representative, because I don't like to see my program publicly maligned.

Anonymous said...

I got my rejection e-mail for the RWJF Health and Society program today too. As mentioned before in this blog, there are two programs available for sociologists: Health Policy and Health & Society. If you really look at the candidates selected for each program, the Health Policy definitely favors candidates from the elite schools.

Anonymous said...

11:14,

When you establish the final list, will you contact folks by phone, email, or snail mail? (for those of us who are traveling during the holidays).

Anonymous said...

Ah, I'm not running the program, I'm in the program. But, I was contacted around this time in December via email and phone. It is extremely well-organized so rest assured they will get in touch with you!

I guess the point is that as scientists, we draw conclusions based upon trends (not exceptions). I see the trend as the being that the RWJF program favors IVY and top-ranked R1s much more so than R2s and lower ranked R1s. Of course there are exceptions, but even the exceptions tend to be more qualified (have done previous health research or worked in the health field) than their IVY and top-ranked piers. Seems to me that you have to prove yourself more if you don't come from the elite. I don't think you will ever see a year when scholars from Harvard and Berkeley are not the most highly represented picks. Thats not mailigning anything- its representing the data...

Well, of course. You enroll in top ranked programs because you are provided certain benefits. In addition to--on average--a stronger graduate training, the top R1s generally have a density of (ASA oriented) social capital that makes it easier to find a (good) job. It's annoying how people equate being in a top program with more rigid forms of social privilege. Acknowledging racial and class differences in early academic success, students in lower ranked programs (myself included) could have gone to top ranked programs had they--for the most part--worked harder as an undergrad.

Anyone know anything about the searches at UC Santa Cruz's Latin American and Latino Studies program? I know this is kind of off topic, but I'm not aware of any similar resource for Latin Am Studies, and I figured if I applied, I'm probably not the only sociologist to do so.

In response to 12:56 - here we go again. No, there are those out there who went to smaller state colleges due to family economics and who worked quite hard (often holding down jobs while their friends partied). Even with that as the case, and with very good GPAs (in some cases 4.0s or very close), along with good GRE scores (1200 range), those from smaller or non-name public state schools are usually not considered by the top 20-top 30 programs for an M.A. or Ph.D. (let alone the truly elite ones). Nice try on sneaking the "didn't work hard enough" hypothesis by everyone though.

12:56 here. I concede that some individuals enroll in less prestigious programs because of nonacademic reasons, but that doesn't take away from the point that top tier schools--which are composed of very high achieving students--provide unique benefits than non-top schools can't. I also take issue with your statement that students from smaller or less known state schools are "not considered" by top 20 programs. This is simply ridiculous. One could easily make the argument that students from "big-name" schools actually have a harder time being considered in top programs simply due to the fact that it is more challenging to work closely and thus get good letters from faculty. Regardless of which students are more "disadvantaged," it is not a school-ranking effect. There is no vast R1 conspiracy against students from regional state university.

12:56, 2:18...Its not about conspiracy. Its about a very clear caste effect. Once you are in a low-ranked college (whether it be due to economics or other reasons), its hard to ever get out. If this is a race, people who went to undergrad at a prestigious U are already halfway to the finish line when it comes to grad school. Same analogy holds at the grad school/job market level. The disadvantage of not having a prestigious letter writer at your R1 does not trump the disadvantage of not being able to get in to an R1 to begin with. I would be willing to match GPAs, GRE scores, comp exams, statistical skills, research experience, and dissertation with any one of the R1 PhD grads. I am betting I would hold my own against most of them (and that was while holding down full and part time jobs through both undergrad and grad school). But RWJF doesn't want me because I am not prestigious enough. Lets get real, people born into working class families, who went to small town public schools, who didn't have the guidance or mentorship from early on didn't know where to begin when it came to college. Somehow we made it through pretty successfully just to find out that we were screwed from the beginning.

I turned down an offer to do my PhD in a top 5 program. Went to a smaller state school instead, to work with 2 leading experts in my chosen specialty.

Anyone who says we're less intelligent can go up against me any day. Many people make decisions for schools (and jobs!) based on more than just prestige.

Ok. I generally agree with what you're saying. I suppose we differ in how we frame this so-called caste system (which I don't think is nearly as rigid as popularly thought). If we're talking about class differentials here then call it that-although I'm not sure I would necessarily buy that either.
RWJF is an extremely competitive competition, and you were probably not selected not because you didn't go to Harvard (sorry for the triple negative), but because a handful of other applicants had qualifications that fit better with the program objectives. Let's get real-what is the utility in RWJF selecting a less-capable Harvard PhD over someone more qualified from a lesser ranked program?

Regarding Lehigh, they have a long-short list and contacted me last week for additional stuff. From what I know, they will be meeting this week to hammer down to the final 4 who will then be interviewed in mid Jan.

Utility? How did I end up on the economist job board?

It's so depressing how non-sociological sociologists can be. Alas.

Anyway, I reposted the soc wiki after it was deleted yet again. If you've posted anything today on the wiki you might want to double check.

Thoughts on moving this, ala the psych folks?

How about that we keep this section of the blog devoted solely to the discussion of the status of searches and relevant interview inquiries? We are all stressed out, but there is nothing new in these posts that complain about how picky top schools are.

Or, it's so depressing how non-scientific social scientists can be...

This is 2:48. What's really depressing is that as highly educated as we all are, it still isn't possible to have a scholarly debate on this forum without people getting in a huff.
Is this a job market thing, an anonymous forum thing, or a sociology thing? Your guess is as good as mine.
blah blah blah.
