In some cases the delay and gap between the short lists and the schedule interviews has to do with the fact that while te dept knows who they are inviting, a dean has to approve of it. Berkeley had a 5 people list already two weeks ago, but they were in that situation. U Conn is waiting for Dean's approval Chicago has already interviewed 3 juniors for the junior open search Guys, the lack of X on some works might have to do with the fact people don't want to reveal thet are being interviewed, don't want to spend time at the wiki or don't read it...It's not so hard to figure out why some placeshave 2 Xs but the info says thay invited 7 people!
Just got an invitation from American for an interview (for the methods hire). The faculty person said I was the first of five to be contacted, but I'm not sure if that is five for methods or five for both of the searches they are doing.
For the person who posted on the wiki that University of Vermont has scheduled interviews for the race position, are you an inside source, or are you one who was scheduled for the interview? Thanks!
Somebody also posted that UMASS Amherst would be calling more people for interviews on Monday or Tuesday night. Anybody hear from them? Any new news on the Cornell PAM search? Did they meet yet and decide on a list?
I just found out that some search committees look at materials on the web rather than e-mailing a request for additional materials. So, if you have materials posted on the web and have not received a request for additional materials, it does not necessarily mean you are out of the running.
This may be the ultimate in paranoia so forgive me for having a weak moment but....
Do schools order their candidates in terms of who is called for an interview first and who is called last? Does order contain any information? I was told that I was the last candidate contacted.
Don't read anything into "order of contact". It means you're in the running, and the next phase will determine who gets a fly-out, not your placement on a list. It's a bit silly for SC's to even say something about "order of contact". Don't they know that we're an over-sensitive bunch that is trying to read into everything?!?
order of contact might also have something to do with time zones. if you're on one coast and they are on the other, they are going to try to time the calls to be during "normal" times.
I'm on a search committee this year. Interviews are scheduled relative to when people can come and when senior faculty are around. If three people are coming in, the order of the interviews means nothing. The interview process is important because, though committees may have hierarchies of candidates going into the interviews, ALL THE FACULTY are much more involved in selecting the final choice - so the ordering can change just on this basis alone. Also, there's a reason we ask people to come give talks/chat with us. While the interview isn't a completely even play-field, it's pretty darn close to it.
if they are in before the review process starts then you are fine. if they arrive after that, sorry but then your file is likely to remain among the incomplete files that nobody cares to check out.
maybe you can ask them if you can have your letters emailed.
I actually had this happen for (at least?) two positions this year. In both instances the departments notified me, one through e-mail, the other through letter.
Since the letter had been written and there was just some miscommunication, the tardy parties e-mailed an electronic copy in lieu of the hard copy getting there in the mail.
I guess some SC's may hold it against you, but since they've been in the same boat, it seems like most are understanding, at least if there is a legitimate reason why it's late and it can get to them quickly...
Thank you 10:39. Has Pomona contacted all candidates or do I still have a shot? I know last year they did fly-outs in November so I'm assuming I'm out of the running.
I don't have info for this year but Pomona last year had a earlier deadline than this year. I think they might have invited more candidates after the Nov. talks too. So, it ain't over til it's over, which goes for all these jobs.
General comments: Applicants should recognize that departments dearly want to hire you (and as many of you as possible). All of those who come for interviews, and many who just miss the cut to be invited out in the first round, are typically judged to be very promising and very worthy of a job offer. Only a disastrous visit (and this happens in less than 10% of cases) will result in someone falling below the standard required to secure an offer. Whether you receive an offer after having been invited for an interview is often determined by a department's ability to convince a dean to let the department make an offer.
Cornell: Because of the university's unique public/private structure, sociology as a discipline is dispersed throughout the university. But, the sociology searches are coordinated to some degree (usually by way of overlapping members of departments serving on the search committees of other departments). This adds an extra amount of fluidity to all of the searches, and those candidates who have not been invited for interviews may yet still be (as files get shuttled around, complementarities across departments emerge, and so on).
Would the wonderful person who posted the US News and World Reports rankings list be generous enough to also post the criminology list? It would be much appreciated.
Does anyone know how many candidates IN TOTAL Oregon contacted for interviews? Also, of the two Xs on the Wiki, any idea which positions they are interviewing for (i.e. the open slot or the race/ethnicity slot)? Thanks!

CSU Sacramento is calling for permission to contact references of some subgroup of applicants. This was for their quant methods position - not sure about the other one or how small the list is.
Has anyone heard anything at all about the UT-Chattanooga position? It isn't even listed on the Wiki, but there was a search going on there for an asst professor (areas open) that closed in September. In their ASA ad, they stated "interviews will commence soon after November 1st." Thanks and good luck all!
The new Kent State posting with the Dec 8th deadline is for a position at a 'regional' campus. The Tuscarwas campus is about sixty miles south of the Kent State main campus.
Someone asked about the Puget Sound position. My phone interview was for the theory position, and they said there's a long shortlist. Not sure what the status is of the medical soc position there.
I agree. The rise in the proportion of positions that are adjunct is accompanied by an ideology of meritrocracy that suggests that the truly talented get tenure-track positions, and therefore adjuncts deserve precarious work. And yet, remaining an adjunct instructor is as much a result of structural change as anything else.
I had a phone interview with IUP the week before last. I haven't heard back yet. They did say something about sending names to the dean, so it sounds like they've got their list. Their whole process is moving quite slowly- the application deadline was in August!
what's up with the Brown searches? anyone know which one the shortlist entry on the wiki is about (spatial analysis, org studies, junior environment, senior environment)? or why they haven't started interviewing almost three weeks after deadlines?
Here's a guess for the last question. Because they're one of a whole lot of other programs that are well after the deadline and haven't started interviewing--or even reviewing applications.
It goes slowly. I'm not sure why programs have early deadlines when they don't plan on really getting to the process until later. Maybe they're overly optimistic?
Most of us are in deep shit. Over 400 applicants at Amherst (tied for # 34), and over 300 for Colorado (tied for # 55). We should all be revolting against our dpts. demanding our $$ (and lives back) for misrepresentation.
Does anyone object to me removing a school from the "telephone interview" or "more materials requested" lists, once they have moved onto campus interviews? I would only do this for schools that I had personal info on. ~Benny
Has anyone counted jobs on the wiki? I get approximately 210. So, as per 7:10am, if there are 400 applicants for UMass, then yes, many of us are screwed. Some of those 400 will be people who already have jobs and want to get out of Tulsa, as it were. But all the same, the overproduction of PhDs continues...
11:37, there are more jobs. chronicle of ed (and hercs) list more jobs, including tenure-tracks at city universities and community colleges and adjuncts. Plus, many adjunct positions are only listed locally (think craigslist or dept websites) right before they're needed. There are jobs for all 400+ of us but less than half are probably tenure-track at places where most of us want to be.
I know that's not necessarily great news, but the fact is that even if we're still ABD at the end of this academic year, most of us can still pick up one-years, VAPs, instructors, or other forms of adjuncts. It's a way to (barely) pay the bills, buy some more time to get out pubs, and to get more teaching experience for those courses that SCs want filled (ie. quant methods, theory, and intro to soc).
so, if you're seriously going to consider any work, do a regional search at chronicle of ed and herc. Also, talk to whoever is in charge of adjuncts at your local colleges and universities and get into their pool of lecturers.
7:39, i am on the SC at UMass and we did have a meeting yesterday. we will invite in a few senior candidates, but we will also be inviting in at least 2 more junior candidates (and maybe 3 or 4 depending on what the Provost approves), so there is still hope. while i am not on the market now my participation in the SC at UMass has made me increasingly nervous for when i do go on the job market. good luck to everyone.
thanks for the update, 12:27. UMass SC's participation on this blog has been a good model for timely open communication between SCs and candidates. I wish more SCs openly talked to us here.
Within the next ten years, there will be more jobs (both from retirements and new positions due to demand) than there currently are Ph.Ds. A lot of those 400 people are probably on a "soft" job market year. Almost everybody gets a job eventually. The 2003 unemployment rate for sociologists was 2.3%, less than half of the rate for the general public.
Will a lot of people have their hopes and dreams dashed? Yes. But will they be employed? Probably.
12:51, as of now the senior invites have not officially gone out, to my knowledge. i am not the chair of the committee but i imagine he will contact them in the next few days. the basic process is that we have to get approval from the administration. i do want to remind everyone that there is much uncertainty in this process, for both depts and applicants, and we could add more senior or junior invites as we go. i imagine this goes for most depts. so, hang in there.
RE: UMaryland-Baltimore County. I got an email last weekend from the SC chair suggesting I might apply to the quant methods position in their LLC program. Obviously this means nothing for the soc job, but suggests that they are currently still reading files.
Ditto 7:54, I got that email too, though they can't have been reading files too carefully as I am a qualitative researcher and totally unsuitable for the job!
RE: UMaryland-Baltimore County. The LLC program is a Ph.D. program in cultural studies. The sociology department is basically an MA granting department. (All their doctoral students are actually students in other programs elsewhere).
Re: Maryland-Baltimore County. In the email you received, were you basically being told that you were not a candidate for the sociology position, OR that you should ALSO apply for the other position? I have heard nothing from them (no EOE card or anything), so I'm just curious. I assume I'm not in the running there given the lack of communication, but I thought I would ask. Good luck!
I think the LLC Chair for the Maryland position just took the files from the soc position and started sending out emails to get more apps. He is not even on the SOC search committee. Getting that email does not mean you are not being considered for the soc position.
I concur with 6:39 - I'd assume that they just haven't moved in the process. I also haven't gotten any contact (not even EOE) from them except the email.
6:39 and 9:04 - thanks for the supporting comment. It is hard not to get down at times with the inconsistent information you receive (or total blackout of info in some cases), but you are right that the assumption was premature. Good luck all!
Does anyone know anything about Oberlin? It suddenly appeared on the wiki as scheduled interviews. I've been waiting for them. Who posted there? How many people are they interviewing? Has everyone been contacted yet?
3:52-I've gotten EEOC and standard form letters from Hunter and Queens, and the Chair of the Queens SC posted here (awhile back). The CUNY system creaks along exceedingly slowly, so I expect it will be awhile before they make a short list and start interviewing.
I see that U of West Ga has a short list -- I didn't apply - it was my undergrad alma mater. That soc dept is wonderful -- I don't know the crim people so I can't speak to them - but the other sociologists are some of the most creative thinkers I've ever met.
Re: U of Virginia's long short-list: do you know about the short-list because you've been informed that you're on it? IOW, if I don't have direct information about this, should I conclude that I'm not on it?
UVA's short list... we were contacted via email and informed that they had cut the list down to 15 and they wanted to make sure we were still interested.
Wesleyan must be making some progress because they just contacted me to clear up some issues with my file (not for additional materials).
this may seem like a dumb question, but why do schools make a long-short list? and what is the probability of making it to the final interviewee list if you're on a long-short list?
What is a reasonable time frame to assume that you are no longer a viable candidate for a position? I was contacted via email and phone by a few SCs back in early/mid October, expressing eager interest in my candidacy. Since then I have heard nothing, not even a general letter saying that I've been cut. I haven't followed up with the SC members who contacted me. But now I'm thinking that sufficient time has passed and I should contact them re: where I stand. Any suggestions on (a) whether it's a good idea to contact them, and (b) what to say if/when I do contact them?
Thanks!!
PS. Aside from some of the bitter posts, I've really enjoyed this forum and truly appreciate people's willingness to share their experiences and advice!
In regard to contacting search committees: I wouldn't do it unless you have another offer in hand and want to let them know your timeline is growing short. Personally, I'd be afraid of being thought a pest.
At my department, we made a long-short list because we had to narrow down the files (~200) for everybody to read. The heads of the SC did the narrowing (to 25) and then we all read each file to choose our top 5 (we invited 3 to interview; and have 2 in reserve).
Did anyone get one of those invites from UMass the SC mentioned? I am on pins and needles wondering if they called people yet (after their last meeting).
4:23-Depending on what places you are talking about, I'd say you shouldn't rule yourself out yet. A lot of searches are going through the interview process pretty slowly, especially the schools that are all waiting on the "stars" to make their decisions.
Now, if you DO have other offers pending, it makes sense to make a call to tell them you have an offer but are also interested in their position, etc.
re: UVA short-list - was there more than one position? I applied for an associate position. Is this long shortlist for that, or for a tenure-track position?
SCs make long-shortlists because even if, let's say, only 50 people applied, no doubt there will be more than 3-4 good fit candidates. Typical interview list ("shortlist") is 3 candidates, barring special circumstances (like, a local candidate, or international candidate whose visit is expensive). The long shortlist gives the SC the ability to ask for more info, talk to references, do a phone interview - anything to narrow the 8-12 good fit long-list candidates.
curious if anyone knows anything about wright state. their deadline was early sept. there's no activity on the wiki...and their listing is no longer up. i checked the university page, and the listing is still up there.
As far as contacting SCs goes, I'd worry about being a pest too, in general. But if you've already had a substantial interaction with them (including, for ex, a promising phone interview), and if a good amount of time has passed without hearing anything (a month to 6 weeks?), then I think a very gentle "checking in" email isn't likely to be perceived as terribly pesky. If you send such an email, though, you need to be prepared for the possibility that you won't get a response.
I just found this site. I see that Berea scheduled phone interviews a week or two ago. I was really interested in that position.
Can the poster of that comment add any additional info? If you feel comfortable sharing, do you know if those with phone interviews are ABD, already Assistant Profs, or?
I see that the University of Minnesota is up on the scheduled interviews list. Does anyone know if that means they've contacted everyone they're going to contact?
So I guess no one has heard from Pepperdine at all? Not even a request for more materials or anything (Letters were not included in the application). Thanks.
Got an email from Barnard acknowledging receipt of my application and stating that they "are in the process of reviewing applications and will contact you if we are in a position to pursue your candidacy."
I know that Barnard has contacted candidates for its urban position. Two people I know told me today they've been contacted. Don't know how many they are inviting.
For the person who put Cal State Sacramento on the short list on the wiki: two questions. 1) Did they actually cut down their list from those they contacted for more information? 2) Is this for both the social psych. and quant. positions?
What? I wasn't even aware that they had contacted candidates! Have they been interviewing for a while? I don't understand how this could have happened so fast. This is for the junior position right?
Thanks for the info. I figured getting an anonymous sounding email like that was a sign that I wasn't making the cut. But good luck to those who got an interview!
They sent me via post a letter requesting that I fill out the Faculty application form, which also asks for a cv, teaching statement, research statement, and agreement with university mission. I had not originally filled this out because it wasn't requested on the ASA Job Bank, but apparently it's required. I took this to mean that they are only just now looking at files, but it's open to interpretation.
2;51 again. I apologize if I came across as rude. I am just shocked that the demography position at CUNY closed so fast. Shocked and disappointed. Was there an inside candidate? Or were they just moving really fast?
How can this be true? Is there more than one position? According to the CUNY Institute for Demographic Research there is an assistant professor demog search at Queens with a NOVEMBER 20, 2007, closing date! See http://www1.cuny.edu/academics/centers-and-institutes/cidr/employmentopps.html and http://portal.cuny.edu/cms/id/cuny/documents/jobposting/021700.htm#P-11_0
I'm confused about Barnard. Why would they send emails to applicants confirming receipt of the application and indicating they're currently reviewing files AT THE SAME TIME that they schedule interviews? What's the point of the emails to non-interviewees? Is this mis-information, or is Barnard being purposefully deceptive?
4:32 dunno; I had the same thing happen with Cornell, got a letter from them (snail mail) announcing that they had opened a file while the WIKI was showing that they had moved on to schedule interviews. Screw us over, dear departments, just do it ethically (and legally)
If a department gets over 300 applicants, I can imagine it taking quiet a while to process all applications and sending out letters informing people that their materials have been recieved. Do you understand how much adminstrative support you need to send out 300 letters? And I can see that the search committee trying their hardest to contact candidates once they've been selected even if the adminstrative task of sending out letters is not complete. I don't see why this is necessarily deceptive or unethical on the part of schools.
I don't think it's terribly unethical; they are keeping their options for inviting other people in (aside from the lucky 3 or so who've already been invited) later on. So they are in a sense "still reviewing files" even if they've made some initial decisions.
Re: Queens. All i know is someone cancelled its campus visit at my school because it accepted an offer from CUNY-Queens for the demography cluster.
Re; Barnard, sorry the acknowledgment emails does not mean much, just that they got your file. Sometimes those things get send automatically by the secretary once the selection process is over, while somebody else in the department is dealing with contacting the selected candidates. Since they don't know if they will extend an offer to any of those candidates, or whether if there is an offer it will be actually accepted, the email they send you keeps their options open in case things don't work out on the first round of invitees.
What is going on with UMass? The last piece of info was that they were going to invite a few more senior and 2 more junior people. Has anyone heard? Did the admin give approval to invite these candidates for interviews?

Yes, I think it was made clear already they contacted EVERYONE at once.
Just found out the Virginia Tech search was cancelled due to university wide budget cuts.
Any information on Barnard?
Virginia Tech had 4 positions - one global, one race, one soc, and one STS. I got an email about the Soc position being cut, like the poster above.
I wonder about the fate of the other 3 positions...
Just got an invitation from American for an interview (for the methods hire). The faculty person said I was the first of five to be contacted, but I'm not sure if that is five for methods or five for both of the searches they are doing.
In your experience, do SLACs usually contact all phone interviewees, including those who don't make it to the next round?
For the person who posted on the wiki that University of Vermont has scheduled interviews for the race position, are you an inside source, or are you one who was scheduled for the interview? Thanks!

I posted Vermont on the wiki--it's my friend who got an interview.
could somebody please confirm that riverside has scheduled an interview for the global social change position?
11:42, thanks! Is it possible to divulge any info about your friend (i.e currently an asst. prof somewhere, currently ABD. etc.?)

I want that job so badly!!!
Are those who are added to a shortlist generally informed that they're on the list? Or does it vary by department?
re:re:re Kansas
I was contacted by email. I guess they informed all candidates on their shortlist where their process is.
Any word on the Cornell Demography search (in the public policy and management dept)?
Has anyone heard anything on the position at USC -University of Southern California?
I'm on a search committee this year. Interviews are scheduled relative to when people can come and when senior faculty are around. Anybody heard anything from the Pomona College job?
Pomona has scheduled phone interviews.
I know--nothing from USC yet? Not even an EOE form!
No USC info here either.
Anybody has any idea what happens if recommendation letters arrive late?
One of the schools I have an interview at let me know that my letters were not in yet. So it's not the end of the world, necessarily...

Thank you 10:39. Has Pomona contacted all candidates or do I still have a shot? I know last year they did fly-outs in November so I'm assuming I'm out of the running.
It looks like they've started interviews for the demography position at Cornell in the PAM dept according to the Wiki. How depressing...
Does anyone have any idea what rank they're interviewing at?
And for UConn, have they contacted people on the shortlist even if they're still waiting for Dean's approval?
Hi all. Has anyone heard anything from NC State? They were supposed to be contacting their short-list last week.
Also, any news at all on the Puget Sound search?
Cornell's Department of Policy Analysis and Management is interviewing at the assistant level.
Have all candidates benn contacted for the PAM at Cornell? Or are they gradually inviting candidates?

Another IUP call - is there someone here who had a phone interview scheduled? Did it happen? Did they say where they were in the process? Thank you!
Rutgers, anyone?
when will stanford come up with a short list, does anyone know?
Stanford has a short list and has invited out three candidates.
CSU Sacramento is calling for permission to contact references of some subgroup of applicants. This was for their quant methods position - not sure about the other one or how small the list is.
Re: 1:21
CSU Sacramento is also making the same calls about their social psych position.
Congrats to the U of Chicago candidate!!
sorry, just to clairfy, an offer for U of Chicago was posted on the wiki. I'm congratulating that individual. No offers have been accepted yet.
Can anyone give a sense of how many applicants have been applying for positions that you know about?
Has anyone heard anything at all about the UT-Chattanooga position? It isn't even listed on the Wiki, but there was a search going on there for an asst professor (areas open) that closed in September. In their ASA ad, they stated "interviews will commence soon after November 1st." Thanks and good luck all!
It ranges. Eckerd got 85. UMass Amherst got over 400.
How about if everyone puts an @ next to the name of the school if they applied there?
Really, just kidding.
The new Kent State posting with the Dec 8th deadline is for a position at a 'regional' campus. The Tuscarwas campus is about sixty miles south of the Kent State main campus.
any scoop on the georgia state stat/urban/race position?
Someone asked about the Puget Sound position. My phone interview was for the theory position, and they said there's a long shortlist. Not sure what the status is of the medical soc position there.
Hey....anyone know about Marshall, St. Norbert, Cal State Sacramento, and UNF? Good/Bad? Anyone else heard from them?
1:21 and 1:53, can also confirm CSU-Sacramento asked to contact references....
So uh, this is what Marx was talking about with the "reserve army of labor".
I wonder if this an application of the neoliberal shock doctrine, the rise of adjunct positions
Whoa. Cool it with the nerd stuff.
Doesn't IUP have two open positions?
Thanks for the IUP info! I don't know about a second position...the one about which I was inquiring had a deadline in August, though.
what's up with the Brown searches? anyone know which one the shortlist entry on the wiki is about (spatial analysis, org studies, junior environment, senior environment)? or why they haven't started interviewing almost three weeks after deadlines?
Here's a guess for the last question. Because they're one of a whole lot of other programs that are well after the deadline and haven't started interviewing--or even reviewing applications.
It goes slowly. I'm not sure why programs have early deadlines when they don't plan on really getting to the process until later. Maybe they're overly optimistic?
I saw that Barnard is now listed as having a "long-shortlist". Is that insider knowledge, or were people contacted? Thanks!
Re: Barnard
I heard from a friend that people were contacted for more materials and were on a long list of about 10. Might not mean much.
I've received a letter from University of Colorado, they are inviting three people. I am not one of them. Anyways, who wants to live in Colorado?
7:24 and 8:05--Hurray!! Finally some sociologists on the blog.
1:29PM: at least you got a letter from them...
Yes, IUP has two positions.
i had wanted to live in CO, but apparently it is not to be. i haven't gotten a letter.
I got my rejection letteer from Colorado yesterday. Over 300 applications, they said.
Most of us are in deep shit. Over 400 applicants at Amherst (tied for # 34), and over 300 for Colorado (tied for # 55). We should all be revolting against our dpts. demanding our $$ (and lives back) for misrepresentation.
Does anyone know if UMass had their Nov 5 meeting? Are they interviewing more senior folks or going back to their junior pool?
Does anyone object to me removing a school from the "telephone interview" or "more materials requested" lists, once they have moved onto campus interviews? I would only do this for schools that I had personal info on. ~Benny
go for it, Benny. I have already done that for schools for which I had info on, too. it keeps things clearer.
Any updates on the status of Minnesota Race/Imm? Also, what about Brown Spatial Analysis?
No update here on MN, though I did receive the form letter request for more info weeks back.
Heard Maryland College Park had first junior interview yesterday and candidate was well received.
Speaking of Maryland, what about Maryland-Baltimore County? Any news there?
FYI, Rutgers will bring in candidates in late November/early December. Short list has not yet been finalized.
Brown, Texas, UI-Chicago, FSU have invited in candidates. Miami U has scheduled phone interviews.
Any news on Swarthmore, George Washington, or Tufts? Thanks! :)
Riverside global social change/ political economy, any news on that? Their deadline was Sept 4. It has been two months.
How about info on Weslyan and Oberlin?
Has anyone counted jobs on the wiki? I get approximately 210. So, as per 7:10am, if there are 400 applicants for UMass, then yes, many of us are screwed. Some of those 400 will be people who already have jobs and want to get out of Tulsa, as it were. But all the same, the overproduction of PhDs continues...
Update on UConn: Scheduling of interviews for Nov/early Dec. has begun for the 6 people approved for interviews.
Probably.
Did the invites to the senior people at UMass go out already?
SUNY Albany is meeting to discuss the global candidates tomorrow. These are the four they interviewed during the past two weeks.
UCONN:
Have all 6 interviewees been contacted already or is there still hope?
12:51, as of now the senior invites have not officially gone out, to my knowledge. i am not the chair of the committee but i imagine he will contact them in the next few days. the basic process is that we have to get approval from the administration. i do want to remind everyone that there is much uncertainty in this process, for both depts and applicants, and we could add more senior or junior invites as we go. i imagine this goes for most depts. so, hang in there.
COME ON Northwestern. Make up your minds already. Draw straws. Whatever. Just pick.
Anyone know whether the UI-Chicago interviews are for the med soc position?
Also, I second the Northwestern sentiments (and thanks for the laugh!).
6:48, thanks so much for all this information at UMass. It makes things a little less stressful.
RE: UMaryland-Baltimore County. The LLC program is a Ph.D. program in cultural studies. The sociology department is basically an MA granting department. (All their doctoral students are actually students in other programs elsewhere).
Hi, is there any news on Swathmore? Thanks so much.
Any news on Ohio State?
riverside scheduled interviews for the global change position.
Swarthmore is asking for letters of recommendation.
Were the Colorado-Boulder rejection letters sent to home or campus mail addresses? Thanks!
My U Colorado Boulder rejection came via campus mail today.
Any news on the Princeton demography position?
UVA now has a shortlist of 15.
This should really be on another thread, but since it came up here...
The "Pigeon Guy" (I'm sure he's loving that) is giving/has given his talk today at UPenn.
If you're out there, I wish you the very best of luck! I'm thrilled to see another ethnographer, and a creative one, doing so well on the market!
Got a rejection letter from Columbia. I hadn't applied :)
RE: UConn the six candidates have been contacted.
Any news from Hunter, Queens?
Any word from NC State? They've been shortlisting forever....
I got my friendly rejection letter from Sarah Lawrence College today.
Anyone have any inside news about USC? Do they at least have a long/short list? Thanks!!
Does anyone know anything about Oberlin? It suddenly appeared on the wiki as scheduled interviews. I've been waiting for them. Who posted there? How many people are they interviewing? Has everyone been contacted yet?
And what about Weslyan? Anyone?
My Colorado rejection came to my home today
Colgate was scheduling interviews by phone yesterday.
At my department, we made a long-short list because we had to narrow down the files (~200) for everybody to read. The heads of the SC did the narrowing (to 25) and then we all read each file to choose our top 5 (we invited 3 to interview; and have 2 in reserve).
I also received an email from Wesleyan, asking for additional information.
So has Weslyan come up with a short list yet or is there still hope?
Does anyone have any more info on the demography position at Cornell's PAM? Have all candidates been contacted? thank you!
I second the request for info on Cornell's PAM position.
re: Northwestern short-list... does that second X in the wiki mean that the straws were picked?
Does anyone know when Rutgers will come up with a short list?
re: UVA short-list - was there more than one position? I applied for an associate position. Is this long shortlist for that, or for a tenure-track position?
I just scheduled a campus visit with Suffolk University
Cornell PAM/demography has invited people out for interviews.
I know of two people that Northwestern has invited for interviews.
Some of this may be repeat info:
Univ of West Georgia has a list of about 10-15.
Swarthmore sent out an email asking for letters of recommendations.
Cal State Northridge has a long-short list (10-12). They're doing phone interviews now.
College of Charleston also has a long list. They contacted me because my file was not complete.
NC State has made a list of 3 candidates for the gender/family search. They should be scheduling interviews soon.
I just found this site. I see that Berea scheduled phone interviews a week or two ago. I was really interested in that position.
Can the poster of that comment add any additional info? If you feel comfortable sharing, do you know if those with phone interviews are ABD, already Assistant Profs, or?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Rutgers has contacted its short list of 4.
Any word on NC Greensboro or U British Columbia? Thanks!
berea says that they are running a bit behind (i suspect administrative obstacles), so they'll probably invite folks to visit in two or three weeks.
thanks, 7:11, for the info on berea
For the person who posted about St. Lawrence University having scheduled an interview, was it for the rural sociology or methods position? Thanks
Any word on the positions in (1) Michigan State's Global Urban Studies program, or (2) Long Beach's International Studies program?
U. British Columbia has not started reviewing files yet.
I see that the University of Minnesota is up on the scheduled interviews list. Does anyone know if that means they've contacted everyone they're going to contact?
I posted on the wiki list about the interview at St. Lawrence - it is for the methods job.
So I guess no one has heard from Pepperdine at all? Not even a request for more materials or anything (Letters were not included in the application). Thanks.
Anyone hear any news about the Vanderbilt Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society search (med soc)?
Any word on U of Iowa? It's been quite a while since they had asked for additional materials.
It's also been awhile since Wisconsin-Madison asked for additional materials. Has anyone heard anything else from them?
This may be dumb question, but when a school asks for other materials, what does this generally entail?
Got an email from Barnard acknowledging receipt of my application and stating that they "are in the process of reviewing applications and will contact you if we are in a position to pursue your candidacy."
I know that Barnard has contacted candidates for its urban position. Two people I know told me today they've been contacted. Don't know how many they are inviting.
Queens College, CUNY GC has made an offer for the demography search and it has been accepted, so that search is closed.
sorry
For the person who put Cal State Sacramento on the short list on the wiki: two questions.
1) Did they actually cut down their list from those they contacted for more information?
2) Is this for both the social psych. and quant. positions?
Thanks!
Re: CUNY Queens-Demography
What? I wasn't even aware that they had contacted candidates! Have they been interviewing for a while? I don't understand how this could have happened so fast. This is for the junior position right?
re: Barnard
Thanks for the info. I figured getting an anonymous sounding email like that was a sign that I wasn't making the cut. But good luck to those who got an interview!
RE: Pepperdine.
Queens Demog position:
I'm bummed. Sounds like an inside favorite to me, too. Congratulations, and thanks for accepting an offer so quickly!
More on the Queens Demog Hire:
How can this be true? Is there more than one position? According to the CUNY Institute for Demographic Research there is an assistant professor demog search at Queens with a NOVEMBER 20, 2007, closing date!
See http://www1.cuny.edu/academics/centers-and-institutes/cidr/employmentopps.html
and

I was notified today that I am on USC's long short list. They are in the process of narrowing it down to the finalists.
I received in the mail this week the same letter from Pepperdine, fwiw.
re: queens demography
was there ever a short list?
re: queens demography
was there ever a short list?
I don't see why this is necessarily deceptive or unethical on the part of schools.
re: Barnard
I don't think it's terribly unethical; they are keeping their options for inviting other people in (aside from the lucky 3 or so who've already been invited) later on. So they are in a sense "still reviewing files" even if they've made some initial decisions.
Ramapo College has scheduled interviews.
Anyone heard anything about the position at Ball State University. I had an interview but never heard back.
any word about where Smith College is in their search?
Bibi
Has anyone heard from the Berkeley diversity cluster position?
What is going on with UMass? The last piece of info was that they were going to invite a few more senior and 2 more junior people. Has anyone heard? Did the admin give approval to invite these candidates for interviews?
