Berry College was setting up interviews during December, trying to get candidates in during January. Haven't heard anything about where they are at now.
The folks in Tulane sociology are always quite optimistic about reinstating their grad program (everyone left after the grad school cut the graduate program in late 2005, after Katrina). But, from what I know (limited, but insider information) the university hasn't changed its stance regarding which departments are allowed to begin admitting graduate students again. The university calls it a "suspension" of the program, but realistically, it's a cut, not a suspension. Katrina changed the university's mission in many ways and the focus seems to be on undergraduate education. So, I wouldn't count on having TA's or mentoring graduate students while you're at Tulane.
NYU made three junior offers. They had 7 people visiting but the other 4 candidates did not get much traction among the faculty. As far as I know the offers have not been accepted yet (though 2 of them look pretty much like they will accept), unfortunately that does not mean they will go back into the pool again or that they will extend an offer to the other 4 candidates. They also extended an offer for a joint appt with Environmental Studies to another junior candidate, who was not part of the original 7. Hope this helps
Any news on whether UNC-Greensboro hired. They had a sizable long-short list and then interviewed two (I heard). No rejection letter yet. Are they waiting for the offer to be accepted?
Also, anyone heard news on App State? They too had a sizable long-short and were ready to start interviewing.
Just got a slightly weird letter from Swarthmore (dated 1/16) - I think it's a rejection letter... it said something about how the search committee is identifying suitable candidates, without explicitly saying I wasn't one of them, but implying it through the last line which was "good luck with your career." Very odd.
I got a rejection letter from Stout so if you haven't heard anything, perhaps you're still under consideration. I haven't heard anything from Wisconsin-Milwaukee med soc position. I didn't apply to Portland State's inequality position. For Portland State's health position, they said they are still accepting applications this month despite having a deadline last month.
Does anybody know what is going on with Bard? The wiki showed Bard interviewing at the beginning of Jan, but I recently received an e-mail asking if I was still interested in the position and that they had a long short-list.
U MASS Amherst, If my memory does not fail me, I had a friend who went there for a campus visit in late November. Have not heard anything about it since then. Weren't they the search committee that posted on the blog?
NYU joint position with Enviorn was not made public. They brought in one candidate from my understanding and offered it to him (hint: rats with wings). And so the saga continues.
I'm not convinced that's a dominant idea. Spouses of a potential hire in another department are treated differently. People who are already known in a department, or whose advisors have close connections, are treated differently. People who bring their own funding are treated differently. It's no surprise to me that people who are unusually qualified for a potential financial collaboration between two departments (that possibly could only be made with the right motivation) would be treated differently.
Re: NYU Environ Sometimes departments don't have a line assigned by the Dean but bring someone in as a "target of opportunity" hiring. In those cases, there is no formal announcement of the position, just an invitation to someone that program feels might be very appropriate for them in the hope the Dean will eventually give the green light to the hiring. From what we've seen this year (and in previous occasions too) there was a big chance anyway that the mentioned candidate would have been a finalist anyway.
Since that worked so well for the person interested in College Park, here are a few others that are listed as having made offers but not listed as "accepted." Anyone know their status? Yale, British Columbia, Iowa
The offer at UBC and one of the offers at Yale went to the same person. S/he has also at least one more offer. I don't know if s/he has accepted one of them yet or not. Hope this helps.
Any info on the Purude sociology search. The wiki board says both that an offer was made and that the search was canceled due to changes in hiring priorities. Any additional information? Were these for different positions?
re: Haverford I only know that at least one interview was scheduled for the quant position. Not sure about the other one. I'll post when I find out more.
RE 2/4 4:16pm (Portland State)-Did they request any writing samples before inviting you for an interview? (just curious, I'm interested in the inequality position) Thanks!
RE: UNC-Greensboro I contacted them a month ago and they said that things were still unsettled. They were very nice so you may want to contact them. If you do, I would love to hear what they say. I don't think I should email again so soon.
I just received a rejection from UNC Greensboro dated Feb 1. It stated that they have concluded the review of candidates. So if you haven't heard, that's probably a good thing.
Strange about UNC-Greensboro. I was on their long shortlist and when I contacted them about interviews, they told me that they were inviting only 2 candidates to campus in mid-Jan. Wonder what happened.
9:32AM 2/5: I just re-read the medical sociology job announcement for Portland State, and I sent my writing samples when I applied even though it was not required. So yes, they looked through the writing samples. I usually send in my writing samples unless the job ads explicitly say they don't want the samples. Interestingly, I had one interview where they asked for writing samples after I accepted the invitation to come to campus.
Interesting on UNCG. I was also on the long-short list and never received a rejection letter. However, I am out West so with a Feb 1 date, mine may be on the way.
So, nobody knows if a job was offered or accepted there?
Re: NYU environ and Barnard urban. No other offers will open up because pigeon guy accepted NYU environ. I don't know why people in this blog are so obsessed with him. There are, for my money, at least three other people with more offers than him and at more important departments: Berkeley, Chicago, Michigan, Cornell, Northwestern, Penn, NYU, Yale, etc, etc.
Re: 1108 am. I heard from UT SC almost two months ago that they had hired someone. NC State was supposed to have been in the process of interviewing back in mid-January, but have not heard anything since then.
When they accept a position, are they still posting the news in the "Hires" section of the blog? It seems like there have been very few recent additions, which could also mean that there have been few positions accepted recently.
I think many people who got jobs, like myself, don't want to post because we know that sociology departments read this thing and don't want to post information that is trace-able to us. As the pool of candidates gets smaller, going from "asked for more infomration" to "invited to interviews" to "hired," it seems less likely that people will post.
Thus, we must more and more rely on others to post the hires information
I understand this tendency. At the same time, what could a department dislike about people knowing that they'd hired someone? Perhaps I get it more at the points leading up to hiring.
1. He does great research. 2. Does not come from a top 10 department. 3. Clearly very smart. 4. Last, not least: Sociologists love pigeons and pigeon holes!
Can we move this discussion somewhere else please? Several reasons:
1. It doesn't have much to do with the job market. When people (like me) read posts like that, it makes me want to come back to this blog even less than before; 2. There are other candidates worth talking about as well, but; 3. There is a norm not to talk about specific people on this blog, and; 4. There are many other people out there who are smart, doing good work, and who do not come from top departments (and some who do!) who also deserve encouragement.
Can we please get back to the business of discussing the status of job searches?
A friend with several offers from top schools has made a decision and will inform the schools this week. I am sorry I cannot say more, but maybe this will be helpful information to anyone who thinks they might be #2 on the list somewhere.
Don't worry too much about Smith making offers. I don't think that info is reliable at all. The faculty either haven't met to decide on a candidate or have only just met today. They definitely have not gone through the bureaucratic channels necessary for legally extending the offer. Their timeline is 3-5 weeks.
Info on the wiki has been proven unreliable before. Don't sweat it.
Gossip is one thing. But a formal offer is completely different.
Will the person who listed Smith College has having made an offer please say whether they personally received an offer, or whether they heard that someone had received an offer? 10:25 has indicated that the information is unreliable, but could the actual person who listed Smith on the wiki please clarify?
Smith poster here - I received an email from a Smith faculty member that indicated that their search had concluded. Sorry for the premature posting, I didn't mean to spread misinformation.
I heard over a week ago that UT-Austin had picked invitees for the 2 (jr. & senior) Immigration positions. Anyone know if those candidates have been contacted yet?
SUNY Oneonta is interviewing at least three people in the coming two weeks. One of the NYU offers has been accepted The offer at UBC Vancouver has been declined. One of the Offers at Yale has been declined.
How could Baruch schedule phone interviews? Their deadline was March 1st. I sent my file 2 days ago. I am looking for a job exclusively in the NY area. I'm really sorry to hear this.
It could easily be the case that they are doing phone interviews along the way, as they see applications they like, but won't be making final decisions about who to invite out until after the deadline. This doesn't mean that your chance is gone.
UBC- Vancouver: From what I've heard they are also making a senior offer in the same area so it looks as if they will be standing path on the junior position.
does anybody have any information on the iowa state position that closed 2/1? this is the position that required teaching in the interdisciplinary communication studies program.
I had a phone interview with them this past week. They said they were in the beginning stages of their search and might not schedule campus visits for another 6 weeks or so. (So perhaps they are planning to schedule more phone interviews up until then).
I didn't have a phone interview with them but I have received a letter acknowledging receipt of my application. It said they would start reviewing the applications at the end of January.
I am also very interested in getting a job in the NY area and I believe I am pretty competitive- lots of pubs, top school, teaching experience etc. Also I do research in the areas that they specified. To be honest, I'm a little disappointed that they haven't called me so far :(
I liked the letter though. Letters sometimes tell so much about the place. For instance, my rejection letter from Loyola.... I soooo appreciated it. It was so kind and encouraging. Lucky is the person who got a job there.
If I could only build a career on kind and encouraging rejection letters I'd be a "superstar" by now! Hell, I could build a second career on cold and dismissive letters!
Rice did the same as Dartmouth. Discouraging to be competing against "underplaced" asst. profs with amazing records. Which is not to say they don't deserve the jobs; it's just discouraging.
It seems to me that there is a change from even few years ago, when there was a clearer distinction between teaching places and research places in the academy. Now, even 4-year colleges, particularly good ones, are looking for publication records and grants. Another difference is that candidates are factoring in the location, like NY, so colleges are capitalizing on that, too.
8:38am, I completely agree. I was actually having the exact same conversation with another academic yesterday. I know people with books or book contracts and several peer reviewed articles who are or have been in intense competition for "teaching" jobs this year and last. The senior faculty at these schools often haven't even published books...
How in the hell does someone who has NO public policy research experience, health research experience or interest in either of those fields get a RWJ post doc?? And who was it that said that where you got your degree and who you know don't matter!? Ridiculous!
The RWJ Health Policy program says on its website that one need not have experience in the area to be selected. In fact, it seems geared to attract promising social scientists so that they learn about and want to pursue health policy in the next phase of their career. If you look at the application, it asks you why you choose to pursue "learning about" health policy at this time in your career.
If you are referring to the "pigeon guy" when you claim that where one got their degree matters for getting the RWJ, as others who have posted earlier made abundantly clear, he did not go to an elite program. Also, it is getting a bit old to simply assume that people got things based on who they know simply because who YOU think deserves a job or a post doc didn't get it. Unless you personally know the pigeon guy, or any other person who got prestigious post docs or jobs, how do you know that they have the "inside connections" that you presume they have?
Its not envy...its outrage. Ok, so maybe RWJ Health and Policy program does not care about actual experience, but where does this guy indicate ANYWHERE on his webpage, CV, etc. that his future research agenda includes health policy research. Further, they DO say that they part of what they evaluate is your statistical ability/experience. I don't see any of that on his CV either. Again, not envy, but confusion! It really DOES NOT make any sense that he was chosen.
That's the point--they want people who DON'T have health interests; and they want to train them for 2 years and get them into health policy.
If you have substantive interests in health already, they prefer you do the RWJ HSS program. And yes, they do select qualitative people too (especially the HSS program).
You are wrong. They want people health policy research. For christ's sake, you have to write a proposal about what you want to research while you're there, and it has to be about health policy.
Well, you can believe what you will, but I am in the program so I don't think I'm wrong. Yes, you have to write a proposal about what you are interested in, health-policy-wise, but they prefer for people to be starting that as a new research area.
Perhaps we should move this discussion to the postdocs thread (although I am done).
I heard that Berkeley only made one offer, after the faculty were split on the other position. My understanding is they are not making any more offers. This is second-hand, though.
Berkeley extended only one offer. That candidate has been considering it along with other big schools (Michigan, Chicago, Penn, etc) The decision should come any day. The other people they invited have and did not extend offers to have already accepted job somewhere else.
WSU could very well have canceled the search for the Pullman campus. They dipped back into their pool to bring out a 4th candidate several weeks ago--don't know it that candidate accepted or not. But if not, I doubt they will bring in anyone else. On another note, Auburn has extended an offer and it looks like it will be accepted.
How many of you are first year job searchers vs. 2nd year? I ask because I did not start my search until October, and feel like I missed half the season! I expect to be awarded the PhD this Spring, but see many jobs I felt qualified for being reposted. What are my best options for next year if I still want a TT position for 2009-2010? Help!
Too bad Berkeley didn't interview me. I would have accepted an offer from them any day. I am very good, but don't have a job yet, and probably won't get one this year. Just shows how inefficient this market is.
99% of us would have accepted an offer from Berkeley! The candidate who accepted the position took a while to negotiate the terms of the offer, as any of us would. Nothing wrong with that...
Re: 10:40 I don't know what kind of place you're at, but I was actually told NOT to defend and graduate unless I had a job to take. You're right about half the market being gone by October. Take a couple of weeks during the summer and make sure your materials are updated, start looking at the postings, and get your packets in early. Some school start looking as soon as they get packets in, and several began interviewing before their official deadlines hit.
I've gotten advice going both ways, assuming you can teach at your department (or somewhere) post-PhD. There is an advantage with having the three letters.
I think that there is something fundamentally wrong with this market. When over 200 applicants apply for a position, how does it go unfilled (e.g., 2nd position at Berkeley, other places as well have advertised positions that won't be filled this year)? If it's a case of mismatch between what departments are looking for and how we are being trained, then that's a serious issue the discipline needs to address. This is not a case of, e.g., high schools not preparing students for the world of work. These departments that are rejecting 200 applicants are the same ones who train PhDs! So they are saying they (as a community of sociology departments) are not doing a good job in their training of PhDs? Or are they saying that the people going into sociology are not bright enough? Something else?
Has anything heard anything about the UT-Knoxville environmental sociology position? It says on the Wiki that an offer has been accepted at UT-Knoxville... is that for that position or the other one (Africana studies)?
I heard the thing at Berkeley was because the faculty were split on two candidates, and couldn't decide, so they didn't make the offer. This has happened there before. Also, this kind of faculty split thing happens other places, too. So, one factor is whether the faculty can agree on candidates (which doesn't necessarily have to do with the quality of the candidates but rather factions within the faculty).
Exactly, 8:29. The hires at Berkeley have as much (if not more!) to do with intense internal politics/ugliness/battles over the future of the discipline as they do with the quality of the candidates.

«Oldest ‹Older 2001 – 2200 of 2327 Newer› Newest»Is Tulane admitting more grad students next year?
-sorry for not posting on topic.
Berry College was setting up interviews during December, trying to get candidates in during January. Haven't heard anything about where they are at now.
To the Jan 26 person who was contacted by Tulane -- when did they get in touch?
Anyone has info on offers at NYU or the spatial position at Brown?
Thank you 7:35
Re: NYU
When was the joint appt. with ES advertised? I don't remember seeing it.
word is that the spatial position at brown has been accepted.
heard that the Temple (w. women's studies) and Pittsburgh offers may have been accepted

The University of Pittsburgh has been accepted.
Anyone heard anything about Portland State's inequality (not health) search?
UC Irvine has been accepted
i've seen nothing on the wiki about the u-wisconsin milwaukee med soc/public health position. anyone know what's going on there?
Has anyone heard from Stout, Platteville or Edgewood College?
I got a rejection letter from Stout so if you haven't heard anything, perhaps you're still under consideration. I haven't heard anything from Wisconsin-Milwaukee med soc position. I didn't apply to Portland State's inequality position. For Portland State's health position, they said they are still accepting applications this month despite having a deadline last month.

Any updates on the UMass-Amherst Asst. Prof. search?
U MASS Amherst,
If my memory does not fail me, I had a friend who went there for a campus visit in late November. Have not heard anything about it since then.
Weren't they the search committee that posted on the blog?
Stout has just recently started scheduling campus visits.
Does anyone have any info about the New Mexico State Social Psychology and/or the Western Mich positions?
Does anyone know anything about the George Mason (not George Washington) position?
Does anybody know the status of the two positions at CUNY Queens?
NYU joint position with Enviorn was not made public. They brought in one candidate from my understanding and offered it to him (hint: rats with wings). And so the saga continues.
I was contacted by CUNY Queens (dem.)about a phone interview a few weeks back, but no follow-up.
Re: U Mass Amherst.
I had a friend who accepted one of their many positions there - I think they are done with the junior hiring, from what s/he said.
I believe CUNY Queens has already scheduled interviews (and done at least one).
Re: NYU Environ
GO PIGEON GUY! FLY HIGH INTO THE CLOUDS!
Yeah, just like Icarus!
i found peculiar to learn that NYU offered a position to somebody *ex officio.
a practice far removed from the dominant idea of a market where we all compete equally.
perhaps, another of those *real life lesson.
I'm not convinced that's a dominant idea. Spouses of a potential hire in another department are treated differently. "a market where we all compete equally"..... talk about a fantasy... don't think i've ever heard a sociologist suggest such a thing before!!!!
any word on simmons? it's an anthro search also, so maybe nobody on this blog has heard...

Sometimes departments don't have a line assigned by the Dean but bring someone in as a "target of opportunity" hiring. Haverford has started scheduling interviews.
Maryland (College park)
Is it true that they made an offer to a junior [I know they made a senior offer]? If so, was it accepted?
Occidental has started interviews. Chapman has started scheduling interviews.
From what I know, the junior position for UMD-College Park 9Sociology) has been accepted.
Since that worked so well for the person interested in College Park, here are a few others that are listed as having made offers but not listed as "accepted." Anyone know their status?
Yale, British Columbia, Iowa
Thanks.
The offer at UBC and one of the offers at Yale went to the same person. S/he has also at least one more offer. I don't know if s/he has accepted one of them yet or not.
Hope this helps.
Which position has Haverford scheduled interviews for? Or are they scheduling for both?
I just got a rejection letter from Yale saying that their search is completed, so maybe the position has been accepted.
I can confirm that the UMaryland College Park Sociology junior position WAS accepted.
Any info on the Purude sociology search. The wiki board says both that an offer was made and that the search was canceled due to changes in hiring priorities. Any additional information? Were these for different positions?
Regarding the Purdue search, I got a letter saying that the search was canceled due to changes in hiring priorities.
Interview scheduling has started for the medical sociology position at Portland State.
Does anybody know anything about Kansas State? Their deadline was some time ago.
I don't see any updates on IGPA/Sociology joint position at UIC. Does anyone know where it stands?
UIC IGPA position
one of the search chairs emailed me (12/20/07) and stated that they would choose the finalists before the new year. it's likely closed by now.
re: Haverford
I only know that at least one interview was scheduled for the quant position. Not sure about the other one. I'll post when I find out more.
Kansas State interviewed a couple of weeks ago.
Toronto Scarborough started interviewing for its theory position last week.
any word on kent state tuscarawas?

So, nobody knows if a job was offered or accepted there?
The U. of Iowa position has been accepted.
At least one official invite for the UIC-IGPA position has gone out.
any news about UNLV yet?
UNLV is bringing in 2 candidates for each of the three positions. Interviews have already been scheduled.
Does anyone have information on how many people were scheduled for campus visit at Kansas State (gender position)?
I don't know how many people came in at Kansas State, but I know that one of them took a job elsewhere recently.
Thank you 4:44.
I heard the Barnard joint appt. with urban studies was declined.
I heard Barnard was declined too. And they could had me at a great price!! hahahaha. I guess rats with wings had a better offer from NYU.
Anyone heard from Radford? Their ad made it seem that they were going to move quickly.
Anything about Texas Christian U, Bard or Pacific U?
Re: Barnard and NYU
I heard the famous bird man decided on the NYU position. I wonder if any other jobs will open up.
I'm happy for the pigeon guy. He deserves every offer he gets.
Pacific U made a shortlist a while ago. I don't know if they've scheduled interviews.
Medical sociology at IUPUI started scheduling interviews.
Because he studies pigeons. It's a heck of a lot more interesting than what many sociologists study.
and there you have it... the state of sociology in a nutshell... or maybe an eggshell...
Not sure what's going on across the street, but Barnard had two candidates take other jobs, I hear. Wonder what happens next... The third?
Can anyone post a list of all the R1 schools?
Any update on the status of the Tennessee (Knoxville) or NCSU environment positions?

I concur with 8:02. The obsession with this guy is absolutely ridiculous and says a lot about the state of our field. Get on with it already...
Does anyone know what's going on with SIU? They had an early deadline ...
A friend mentioned that hu was contacted by SIU for an interview, pending some kind of approval.
Also, UW-Milwaukee has contacted people by email to see if they are still interested in the med soc position.
You know what says a lot about the "state of the field?" The term "hu" being used on this blog.
9:13pm, thank you for your useful contribution to this thread.
there are so few people posting new information these days. let's not be jerks to them when they do...

Re: UT positions. I was contacted about an interview there, so I assume they may have contacted others by now, too.
RE Portland State Inequality Position: I just got a rejection letter from them saying that I was no longer under consideration.
Tulane made an offer for the urban position and it has been accepted. They are still interviewing people for Latin American Studies joint one.
anyone know anything about Towson?
how about Berkeley or Cal. Poly San Luis Obispo?
Does anyone know if Pacific University has scheduled interviews?
Re: 10:04. Yes, Pacific University has scheduled interviews
Has anyone heard yet from SUNY Oneonta, Buffalo State or Nazareth?
RWJ postdoc offers have started going out (for both programs, I think).
SUNY Oneonta is interviewing at least three people in the coming two weeks.
One of the NYU offers has been accepted
The offer at UBC Vancouver has been declined.
One of the Offers at Yale has been declined.
Does anyone have any information about the senior level hires at UMass-Amherst? Thanks!
A second offer from NYU was declined. The third one is still undecided.
Any word on the second Haverford position?
Clarification on NYU: Two offers were accepted, two were declined.
Does anyone know about the search at Northern Arizona?
How could Baruch schedule phone interviews? Their deadline was March 1st. I sent my file 2 days ago.
I am looking for a job exclusively in the NY area. I'm really sorry to hear this.
It could easily be the case that they are doing phone interviews along the way, as they see applications they like, but won't be making final decisions about who to invite out until after the deadline. This doesn't mean that your chance is gone.
Northern Arizona made phone interviews last week and are ready to invite candidates for on site interviews
Mount St. Mary's University have made an offer (to someone in my department) which will be accepted.
the offer from Berry was accepted as well as an offer from Georgia State University
The Rice offer has been accepted
Anyone know if British Columbia's still going to try to hire this year? (Or if they've already made another offer?)
All FOUR offers have been accepted at the University of West Georgia.
Has Occidental made an offer yet?
UBC- Vancouver:
From what I've heard they are also making a senior offer in the same area so it looks as if they will be standing path on the junior position.
Augustana College has sent out rejection letters.
does anybody have any information on the iowa state position that closed 2/1? this is the position that required teaching in the interdisciplinary communication studies program.
I interviewed at Occidental, and I haven't heard from them either.
Does anyone know what's happening with Queens College?
They are moving very slowly, but an interview for the demography position has been scheduled for early March.
Oops, 9:13 refers to Queens College.
Interviews are being scheduled for the Med Soc position at Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Soc of Childhood position at Central Michigan.
Has anybody other than the person who posted earlier heard from Baruch?
IUP had a deadline in August. Nothing yet???
Re: Baruch
I had a phone interview with them this past week. They said they were in the beginning stages of their search and might not schedule campus visits for another 6 weeks or so. (So perhaps they are planning to schedule more phone interviews up until then).
Anyone know if the offer at UNC-Greensboro (which I heard from a very reliable source was extended)was accepted?
Also, has App State made an offer?
SUNY Oneonta has made an offer and it looks as if it will be accepted.
Got a rejection letter from Dartmouth. They received over 200 applications this year.
Re: Baruch
In the phone interview did they tell you what the teaching load was?
Re:Re: Baruch
Dartmouth hired an Asst. Prof., from I forget where, with a serious publication record.
Rice did the same as Dartmouth. Discouraging to be competing against "underplaced" asst. profs with amazing records. Which is not to say they don't deserve the jobs; it's just discouraging.
An asst prof is being courted by Penn for their position. I don't remember if they have more than one position or not.
Wright State extended an offer and it was accepted.
Kent State Tuscarawas has started contacting candidates.
8:38am, I completely agree. I was actually having the exact same conversation with another academic yesterday. I know people with books or book contracts and several peer reviewed articles who are or have been in intense competition for "teaching" jobs this year and last. The senior faculty at these schools often haven't even published books...
Ah, the speeding up of everything?
Penn made at least five or six offers, mostly to associate/full professors, but at least two of the offers were to asst profs.
Does anyone have any info about The City College, CUNY?
I see that Smith is back up on the wiki under "offers accepted" - would someone please confirm whether or not this is true?
thanks
Have to do it: Pigeon guy got the Harvard RWJ post-doc and NYU will have a position for him afterwards. Sweet deal. Still flying high!
How in the hell does someone who has NO public policy research experience, health research experience or interest in either of those fields get a RWJ post doc?? And who was it that said that where you got your degree and who you know don't matter!? Ridiculous!
Oh my. I spent a good deal of time and energy putting together my RWJ app. What a waste of time. I can't compete with him.
However, to mr. pigeon's credit. The point of the RWJ program is to bring in people outside of health policy research... recruit them, so to speak.
Unless you personally know the pigeon guy, or any other person who got prestigious post docs or jobs, how do you know that they have the "inside connections" that you presume they have?
geez, i thought we were finally done with the pigeon envy and all the nonsense that comes with it...
Perhaps we should move this discussion to the postdocs thread (although I am done).
changing the subject....
I'm also hoping for a confirmation of the Smith offer information...
Anyone know if Bard has made an offer?
The Smith job offer and acceptance has been confirmed by the dept chair.
Congrats to that person.
Oh well!
The position at UNC-Greensboro was accepted about two weeks ago.
Georgia State will schedule interviews for the second position in a week
any news from University of South Alabama, Denison University or Christopher Newport?
Any news on Pacific Lutheran (Tacoma, WA)? Their deadline was quite some time ago and nothing has changed on the wiki site.
anything final on the 2 Berkeley positions? or Irvine? the wiki has a ! after accepted offer
did WSU (Pullman) really cancel their search?
I heard that the pigeon guy got all the jobs and post-docs... places that couldn't get him just canceled their searches...
Re: 5:15
LMAO! Thanks for the laugh. :-)
I heard that Berkeley only made one offer, after the faculty were split on the other position. My understanding is they are not making any more offers. This is second-hand, though.
Didn't Dension University invite candidates in early Dec? They should have made an offer by now.
Does anyone have any info on the diversity position at Berkeley? Was an offer made and/or accepted?
How many of you are first year job searchers vs. 2nd year? I ask because I did not start my search until October, and feel like I missed half the season! I expect to be awarded the PhD this Spring, but see many jobs I felt qualified for being reposted. What are my best options for next year if I still want a TT position for 2009-2010? Help!
Too bad Berkeley didn't interview me. I would have accepted an offer from them any day. I am very good, but don't have a job yet, and probably won't get one this year. Just shows how inefficient this market is.
it looks like the berkeley job has been accepted:
http://www.unc.edu/~vaisey/
i figured since this is posted on his site it's public info and ok to repost here.
any update on Northern Arizona?
did Towson ever make an offer?
11:01 -
99% of us would have accepted an offer from Berkeley! The candidate who accepted the position took a while to negotiate the terms of the offer, as any of us would. Nothing wrong with that...

Re: 10:40
I don't know what kind of place you're at, but I was actually told NOT to defend and graduate unless I had a job to take.
Maybe most of us are jerks, and departments hold out for decent people? ;)
Anyone hear anything on the Irvine public policy position?
Exactly, 8:29. The hires at Berkeley have as much (if not more!) to do with intense internal politics/ugliness/battles over the future of the discipline as they do with the quality of the candidates.
pacific lutheran is doing a couple interviews this week.
Anyone know the status of Wheaton College (Norton, MA)?
Southeastern Louisiana University scheduling interviews.
Any news on Pomona College?
Was the Univ of Oregon race position filled? What about Univ of Miami? These are not listed on the Wiki.
A credible source tells me that both of Oregon's positions are now filled
Miami did not hire anyone for the race position.
